On the move

What a strange past few months... Fate stepped in and pushed me to finally doing something I had dared to dream lately - leaving New York. So there it is, come Monday Jan 5th, Summer will no longer be a Brooklyn dog - she'll be a transcontinental dog instead. After a long flight to Amsterdam, and then a 12+ hr layover, and then another long flight from Amsterdam to Singapore, my pup will be a tropical canine.

Myself? I'll be flying myself out on the 9th, arriving on the 10th at night, and won't get a chance to visit my girl who will be quarantined (for 30 days no less!) until Monday the 12th. I'm praying with every fiber of my being that she will be ok both during the travel, and inside the quarantine facility.

I'll be documenting our international move here, in case other dogs might have to make a similar move, and they can learn from our experience.

In the meantime, I've been taking her on long jaunts through Prospect Park a lot. I'm going to
miss being there with her. It's a lovely park, and Summer and I have found some really fantastic spots where she can zoom around like a Tazmanian devil, and I can marvel at this beautiful oasis in the city.

Fought the Leopard, and won

OK I managed to figure out WHY Leopard wasn't playing my .avi files. (Because .avi is a windows format, and all I had to do was install some component that would allow windows format files to play in quicktime, duh.)

But now I'm away. So I still can't post that pushing video! But it will come soon, when I get back into the swing of things.

Fighting with a Leopard

Technology is my friend, but only sometimes. This week, it's decided to turn on me.

My trusty little iMac circa 2005 decided that it JUST COULDN'T. No way. I had installed some updates (WHY JACINTA?? WHY???) and when I was restarting, it started beachballing. And beachballing. And beachballing.

I took a shower, and re-emerged fresh. And my mac was still beachballing.

Dang.

So I decided to reinstall OSX Leopard in it since we have it at work. RAWWRRR! Leopard! Woot!

But somehow Quicktime in Leopard doesn't like .avi files. I checked everything and everyone says, Oh Quicktime LOVES .avi files!! .avi files are Quicktime's friends!!

Then why in hell doesn't my mac playback .avi files in quicktime??? I can't watch any of the videos I recorded with my tiny Casio EX-S600 camera (also circa 2005). Stupid stupid technology.

Or is it stupid stupid Jacinta? Can anyone help? Maybe I should just reinstall OSX Panther on my poor little geriatic iMac... I prefer panthers anyway to leopards. Sleeker. Sexier.

So anyway, even though I shot some video of my friend Amanda and her cutie-patooty terrier mix Henry doing some pushing exercises to show a friend how to work pushing with small dogs, I can't post it. Gah.

UKC, here we come!!

See how sad Summer looks? That's because we were just rejected by the AKC for her PAL... Boo. OK OK I know full well that's she's only a Bel Mal mix, but well, worth a shot right?

Of course they made off like bandits with my $35 registration fee too. Boo.

Oh well. So we just sent off for our UKC registration as a Mixed Breed Dog. Yay Mutts!

Here are Summer and my friend Jen's purebreed Belgian Malinois Mika: in a sit/stay that they held for 3 mins. Our trainer is sitting to the left of me making funny whooping noises to tempt them into breaking the stay. Silly Tyril. Doesn't he know our dogs kick ass?

Find It!!!

The following is an example of how smart dogs can be.

This morning while we were training up on Mount Prospect, with Tyril, I was tossing a ball for Summer, and it rolled down a hill as she was chasing it, and it rolled all the way down, under a chainlink fence and down a wooded gulley.

I wasn't keen on losing a nice $6 ball, so we went round the fence to the opening at the end, and I sent her ahead, telling her to Find It, over and over. She immediately went into Hunting mode and trotted back and forth the area, air scenting for the ball. And true to her doggyness, she sure as heck Found It!!

Tyril was pleased. Some dogs have the instinct, and some don't. I guess he didn't realize that she was capable of it.

I told him how I taught her what it meant. And I literally only started doing this about a couple of weeks ago.

I started by rolling the ball around for her on the grass and I sat next to her, to get her interested in the ball. (She has a weirdly low drive for the ball for a spazzy drive dog...) I'd let her lay down and chew on the ball for a bit, then I would ask her to Out it, and I'd pick it up and threw it further away and usually in a tall patch of grass where she couldn't see it.

She'd then trot out for the ball, but because her drive for the ball wasn't high, she wouldn't chase it down. I started calling out Find It, Find It, over and over and over again. For some reason, the repetitiveness of the command encouraged her to air scent for the ball, and the moment she located the ball and bit down on it, I'd squeal out GOOD GIRL!!!!! open my arms and encourage her to recall to me for a good rubdown and some treats.

It didn't take long for her to learn what Find It meant. Which was how I managed to save $6 and get the ball back this morning. Good job Summer!!!

It's too hot to train!!! (Part Two)

This morning in Brooklyn, when I woke up and turned on NY1, it was already 80 degrees. This was at 7.30. I always have a training session with Tyril on Sat mornings, and felt today shouldn't be any different.

Well, I was wrong. Something in the heat and humidity made Summer sluggish and Heeling exercises were too stressful on her. We tried one Heeling pattern, and Tyril said, "OK training is cancelled for today." And no wonder. If she wasn't into it, we just shouldn't make it unenjoyable. I mean, she WAS heeling and she WAS making the about turns, but she was also making them in the most pedestrian fashion, panting the whole way. Her drive was like a balloon from last months party.

So we sat and talked and I tossed a ball around for Summer. She played fetch with some enthusiasm for about 15 mins, and then decided it would be better to lay on the grass and chew on her Bad Cuz.

I can't wait for this heatwave to break. I really need to work on her Off Lead Heel... We did do a couple of long recalls and a couple of Down During Recall, and she performed those with real pizazz.

Which makes me think that Heeling really truly is her, ahem, Achilles Heel.

It's too hot to train!!!

I was born and raised in super sunny Singapore - one degree north of the equator. Hot, humid, tropical, monsoony Singapore. Did I mention hot? So I deal with this so much better than poor Summer. She's a cold weather girl. She's got a really short coat and not much of an undercoat, but give her winter anyday of the week.

So tonight while I tried to train her, she just wasn't that into it.

I tried getting her to chase me for a piece of boiled chicken. She did at first, but was a little meh about it. So I put her in a sit/stay and ignored her for a bit. Then proceeded to try again. A little better.

I then put her on the leash and did a little pushing and Hupping on me. For anyone who isn't familiar with pushing, it's GREAT. Hupping is basically getting her to jump up and plant her front paws on my chest. I also like to throw in the Speak cue when she's in Hup - it seems to get her drive up more. I combined that with a few light leash pops to get her mojo flowing. Magic! She did a couple of kick ass Down during Recalls, but for some reason, her Jump finish from the front sit was slipping.

Ugh. She was fudging the front sit before, but ace-ing the Jump finish. Why was she fudging on something she used to do so well?

My guess is, she doesn't fully get the whole exercise. I must be stressing her out too much to get her drive flowing freely... So by the time she does the great front sit, she's too confused to follow through to the Jump Finish.

So what I did was to keep stepping back and getting her to Hup on me while I stepped back. At the end I asked for a Front instead of a Hup, and then asked for the Heel (her Jump finish). She made a couple of her waah-waah "I'm confused!!" sounds again, so I kept quiet for a couple of seconds, and tried again. "HEEL!" I said. BOOM! Her tookus flew up, swung around, and landed neatly in a sit/heel position.

For nervous energy dogs like Summer, sometimes it's good to apply a teeny bit of pressure to get them to narrow their drive into the behavior you're asking for. When I managed to focus her drive through the pops while hupping, she performed with much clearer drive and focus. After about 5 minutes of training peppered with lots of pushing, I released her with an OK FREE, and tossed her small bad cuz, and she dashed to chase it down.

I wish I could have kept going, but I didn't want to overdo it with her. The heat really is a doozy for her, and I have to keep remembering to always end on a high note, and always leave the dog wanting more.
